About the Quarter-Sawn Flooring CompanyQuarter-Sawn Flooring was founded by Kent MacPherson, a flooring craftsman who has won a national "Floor of the Year" award and produced a wide variety of noteworthy installations.
Over the years, Kent dreamed of building a “Radial Sawmill” copied after the century old “Clapboard” sawmills of New England. With this sawmill, Quarter-Sawn Flooring was born. Kent's business philosophy has always been to use the finest materials and construction methods to produce the finest product. Kent realized that he could build a more stable flooring product by “engineering” a thin piece of figured wood to a high quality platform such as exterior grade Russian Baltic Birch plywood. Two years ago Quarter-Sawn Flooring manufactured 1,500 square feet of engineered Walnut Crotch parquet 12” wide for Hugh Hefner’s Playboy club in Las Vegas. Kent recently visited that floor which is the dance floor in the club. "They told me that people spill their drinks on that floor all night long and that there had not been one problem with the floor." A lifelong woodworker & entrepreneur, Kent bought a WoodMizer portable sawmill in the early 90s. After competing with larger mills for a few years, he began to saw the roots and forks of the local Walnut trees. This lead to supplying a major designer flooring companies with figured woods. That, in turn led to medallion work and the winning of a 2005 NWFA Wood Floor of the Year Award.
